Versatile Frying & Shortening Oil

Cottonseed oil is a versatile vegetable oil valued for its high smoke point, neutral flavor, and ideal beta-prime crystal structure for shortenings and margarines. Global annual production exceeds 5 million metric tons, primarily as a by-product of cotton fiber production.

Huatai's cottonseed oil production lines deliver complete EPC solutions covering every stage — from delinting (removing residual linters) and dehulling, through pre-pressing and solvent extraction, to refining with specific gossypol removal. Cottonseed contains gossypol, a toxic pigment that must be removed during processing.

We offer flexible capacities from 30 TPD to 800 TPD. Each line is custom-engineered based on your cottonseed variety (upland or Pima), lint content, and target oil grade. Mixed refining of cottonseed oil with other oils requires special consideration for gossypol removal.

Cottonseed Oil Production Steps

From raw cottonseed oil to refined oil — a fully integrated process.

1. Cleaning

Raw cottonseed passes through magnetic separators and vibrating screens to remove foreign materials — stems, leaves, stones, and metal fragments.

2. Delinting

Residual linters (short fibers) are removed from cottonseed using acid delinting (sulfuric acid) or mechanical delinting (saw gin), exposing the seed hull for dehulling.

3. Dehulling

De-linted cottonseed is dehulled using bar hullers and separated by aspirators and shaker tables. Hull removal (35-40% of seed weight) improves oil content and reduces fiber in meal.

4. Flaking

Dehulled cottonseed meats are flaked to 0.30-0.40 mm thickness using smooth-roll flaking mills to rupture oil cells.

5. Conditioning & Cooking

Flakes are conditioned with steam to 90-110°C. Critical high-temperature cooking (110-120°C) denatures gossypol, binding it to protein and preventing it from entering the oil during extraction.

6. Pre-pressing

Conditioned flakes are pre-pressed in a continuous screw press to remove 55-65% of the oil, producing press cake for solvent extraction.

7. Solvent Extraction

Pre-pressed cake is extracted with hexane in a continuous chain or loop extractor using counter-current percolation, reducing residual oil in meal below 1.0%.

8. Refining

Crude cottonseed oil is refined through alkali refining (neutralization removes free fatty acids and gossypol), bleaching (removes gossypol pigments), and deodorization to produce fully refined cottonseed oil.

9. Winterization (Optional)

Refined cottonseed oil can be winterized to remove high-melting fractions, producing clear salad oil. Non-winterized oil is used for frying and shortening applications.

Delinting & Dehulling

Acid delinting system or mechanical saw delinter, followed by bar huller, aspirator, and shaker table for hull-kernel separation. Achieves 90%+ dehulling efficiency.

Pre-pressing & Extraction

Continuous screw pre-press followed by chain-type or loop-type extractor with counter-current hexane percolation, DTDC, and miscella evaporation system.

D.T.D.C. System

Multi-stage desolventizer-toaster-dryer-cooler with controlled high-temperature toasting to denature gossypol, producing safe cottonseed meal for ruminant feed.

Refining System

Alkali refining with disc centrifuge for gossypol removal, followed by vacuum bleaching with activated earth and continuous deodorization. Critical for food-grade cottonseed oil.

Winterization (Optional)

Crystallization and filtration for clear salad oil production. Non-winterized cottonseed oil is used for frying oils, shortenings, and margarines.

Controlled DTDC toasting denatures gossypol to bound form, producing cottonseed meal with 40-45% protein safe for ruminant feed, maximizing by-product value.
