The 4 Essential Stages of Edible Oil Refining
A complete industrial edible oil refining plant seamlessly integrates four primary chemical and physical purification stages:
1. Degumming Section (Removal of Phospholipids)
Utilizes the hydrophilic nature of gums. By introducing a precise amount of hot water or phosphoric acid, phospholipids swell, agglomerate, and are separated cleanly via centrifugal disc separators.
2. Deacidification / Neutralization Section (FFA Removal)

Chemical Method: Adds lye (NaOH) to neutralize Free Fatty Acids (FFA), generating soapstock which is then separated out.

Physical Method: Uses a structured packing deacidification tower under high vacuum and heat to strip out fatty acids via steam distillation—ideal for palm and coconut oils.
3. Decolorization / Bleaching Section (Color Pigment Removal)
Crude oil is mixed with activated clay or bleaching earth under a strict vacuum environment. The porous clay adsorbs chlorophyll, carotenoids, and trace metal ions, which are subsequently filtered out by automatic leaf filters.
4. Deodorization Section (Odorous Compounds & Stripping)
Operated under extreme high vacuum (2 – 4 mbar) and high temperatures (230℃ – 250℃). Injection of direct stripping steam carries away volatile odorous compounds, aldehydes, ketones, and thermal degradation elements, ensuring a bland, odor-free final oil.
(Note: For high-wax oils like sunflower, corn, or rice bran oil, a fifth Dewaxing / Winterization section is seamlessly integrated to prevent cloudiness at low temperatures.)
